Which Orthodontic Treatment Should I Get?

At Backus Orthodontics, we understand that many options at the beginning of your smile journey can be intimidating. You can rely on our practice to provide a stress-free and professional environment when deciding which orthodontic treatment you should get. Our team is here to share what kind of care we provide, how to make an informed decision, and our treatment options.

The Basics of Orthodontic Care

Orthodontists like Dr. Jeff Backus specialize in shifting your teeth and jaw into their ideal position as well as preventing and treating common issues such as malocclusion, bite issues, crowding, and protruding teeth. They work to help you achieve your best smile and feel confident in showing it off to the world. Backus Orthodontics uses treatments such as metal braces, clear aligners, and clear braces, among other care options for patients of all ages.

As suggested by the American Association of Orthodontics, your first appointment is recommended to be around age seven to have an early look at your teeth and potential incoming issues before they become more severe. Our team can then monitor your teeth as you grow older so we can help you undergo straightforward treatments.

Guiding Your Treatment Decision

When deciding which treatment will work best for you, it is best to remember what will suit your lifestyle and budget going forward so you continue to comply with your care plan and stay stress-free through payments.

Fitting Your Budget

Understanding the financial needs of each patient is incredibly important to the Backus Orthodontics team. We strive to keep our high-quality care an option for everyone in our community by walking you through a total breakdown of costs during your free consultation so no surprises await you later. Discounts are also offered when complete payment is provided at the beginning of treatment.

Backus Orthodontics is proud to accept all Alabama dental insurance policies and file your claim. We accept BlueCross BlueShield of Alabama, Delta Dental, Metlife, Cigna, Ameritas, and many more. You can find an extended list on our Financing and Insurance page. If you do not see your insurance policy listed, please give us a call, and someone on our team will be happy to provide you with more information.

Different Kinds of Appliances

To help accommodate the various lifestyles of our patients, we provide the option of choosing a fixed or a removable appliance. The former will stay in your mouth for the entirety of the treatment and require some changes to your routine to keep it in perfect condition.

On the other hand, removable appliances offer more freedom, though patients must keep track of removing and cleaning them during meal time. Our team will happily share more details during your free consultation and answer any questions about the difference.

Average Treatment Length

One of the first questions many patients ask when seeking orthodontic care is how long treatment will take. On average, you can expect to be in care for between one to three years.

The length of your treatment will depend on a few factors, including your choice of appliance, the current condition of your oral health and teeth position, and the work you want to achieve. Some patients complete their plan sooner than others, depending on the severity. During your free consultation, Dr. Backus can give you a better idea of your case.

Our Treatment Services

Metal Braces

When you hear orthodontics, you likely think of traditional metal braces. This tried-and-true option is known for its reliability and effective, long-term results. It also is the most budget-friendly option for those looking to fix their teeth without breaking the bank. Metal braces have become much more comfortable and smaller over the years, thanks to advancements in the field.

This fixed appliance is glued onto your teeth throughout your treatment plan and is composed of brackets, wires, elastics, and other components. No matter how complex, you can rely on metal braces to reach your smile goals.

Clear Aligners

Backus Orthodontics is proud to offer Invisalign clear aligners to our patients. A state-of-the-art appliance, clear aligners are an excellent option for patients looking to realign their smile without the conspicuous appearance of metal braces. We provide a series of nearly invisible clear trays that fit over your teeth. Each set of trays stays on for about two weeks for 20-22 hours per day as your teeth shift into their new position.

Invisalign for teens has the additional feature of a blue dot that lets Dr. Backus know how often you have been wearing your Invisalign and helps us help you stay on schedule with wearing it for the prescribed amount of time.

Clear Braces

Clear ceramic braces, another popular discreet option, are an excellent opportunity to work on your dental health without anyone noticing. They utilize tooth-colored brackets that use the same technology as traditional braces, so you can rely on them to deliver the perfect results to match your smile goals.

The slight pressure on your jaw and teeth shifts them over a long period until they reach ideal alignment. Clear braces provide a comfortable feel inside your mouth, so you don’t have to worry about agitation due to friction against your lips, gums, and cheeks.

We Provide Free Consultations!

As mentioned, Backus Orthodontics provides free consultations to each of our new patients at our Hoover practice. During this no-commitment appointment, our team will take scans of your teeth, look over x-rays, and conduct a visual examination to get a better idea of your oral needs, what Dr. Backus can do to help you reach your smile goals, and help you understand your different treatment options.
